Internet Archive is offering free ILL services to reciprocal libraries through a number of systems which include large periodical collections from microfilm, scanned print, and publicly available web postings as well as a large and growing monograph collection scanned by the Internet Archive.

Internet Archive Patrons Can Request Documents from Other Libraries
If you are a patron of the Internet Archive and want to digitally request a chapter or an article from another library, please email ill@archive.org. This is a new service, so please help us create a useful service.
Libraries can Borrow and Lend Non-Returnable Articles and Chapters
RapidILL customers: join over 200 libraries already in the Internet Archive ‘pod’ for free reciprocal ILL by writing to Mike Richins to get your library signed up.
Boston Library Consortium: As a member of the BLC, the Internet Archive lends and borrows non-returnable materials from other members.
ILLiad users: Get the free Internet Archive plugin from Atlas by installing the plug-in from Atlas. Atlas is the author and maintainer of ILLiad.
IDS Project partners: In startup phase now, but IDS Project partners can start using the Internet Archive for free by adding INARC to your LenderAddress table, and everything starts working. Borrowed documents will be returned through Odyssey.
ISO 18626 users: The Internet Archive supports ILL requests through this protocol, we are looking for others that would like to share in this way. Please write to ill@archive.org if you would like to engage us in this way.
ReShare: As a member of ReShare, the Internet Archive is engaged in helping design and build this next generation ILL system.
Worldshare ILL users: Send requests to IAILL or add the IAILL symbol to your automation. IAILL responds to “copy” requests only.
How to Make an ILL Request Through WorldShare ILL
- Login to your WorldShare ILL Account
- Open the Borrowing Requests Dropdown on the left side of the webpage
- Click Create Request
Information to include:
- Journal Title: The title of the journal the article was published within i.e. “The Lancet” OR the title of the book
- ISSN OR ISBN: ####-####
- OCLC Number: #########
- Type: Copy (This must be set to Copy)
- Format: Periodical/Article OR Book
- Language: English
- Article Title: (OR Chapter Title)
- Article Author: NAME
- Volume: ##
- Issue/No: ##
- Issue Date: #### (Provide year only)
- Pages: ##-##
- Lender String: IAILL (Internet Archive lending account ID)
- Electronic Delivery
- Preferred: Illiad/Oddyssey
Example Request:
4. Scroll to the top of the page and click Send Request
5. To view pending requests, within the Borrowing Requests dropdown, click Awaiting Response
Once the request has been sent, the request will appear with the status Submitted. When the request has been received by the Internet Archive, the status will update to Considering.
6. When the request has been filled, it will immediately disappear from the Awaiting Response section. The received article will now be accessible in AE Alert. Click the request ID number.
7. To preview the article, click the Preview button.
8. Please check the article/book chapter before forwarding to your patron. Once confirmed, download the pdf by clicking on the the blue OCLC Article Exchange Link
9. Please Mark as received using the button at the top of the page
10. Request Complete
